Hook and Hunting: Ice Shanty Removal Dates

As ice on the lakes starts turning from solid to liquid, the date to get your ice shanty removed is now more fluid.

We told you about state Representative Curt VanderWall’s bill that would give the DNR power to adjust ice shanty removal dates based on weather conditions instead of a hard date.

It also gives shanty owners the option to display just their DNR sport card number on shanties instead of their name, address and driver’s license number.

That bill is now law.

We talked to Rep. VanderWall Thursday, who says he hopes it means more and safer fishing.

“Chatting with folks back in the district the last few weeks after this bill was passed, they really appreciated the bill being there just for their safety and their protection. And the biggest part is, hopefully, being able to enjoy a longer fishing season,” said Rep. VanderWall.

Based on the weather, the DNR now says all ice shanties need to be removed by March 15.
