DEQ to Answer Manistee Co Residents’ Questions on December Oil Spill
People in Manistee County are hoping to finally have their questions answered three months after an oil spill in Manistee County.
The DEQ is meeting with the public Thursday night at the big bear sportsman’s club in Kaleva.
That’s after an oil spill was discovered in December on 8 Mile Road near Onekama.
Merit Energy told the DEQ something was up when they noticed the line wasn’t at full production.
That’s resulted in this.
About 50 barrels of oil spilled, some leaking up to the surface and covering about half an acre of land.
The DEQ says as of Thursday they now see a 99.6 percent drop in groundwater contamination.
