Boyne City Toddler in ICU with Flu Complications, Community Rallies in Support

A Northern Michigan community is rallying around a firefighter and his family as they stand beside their three year old son in the ICU.

Last week Jase Amesbury was diagnosed with the flu, but complications from it placed him in the ICU downstate.

It’s taken a toll on the family emotionally and financially, but without asking the community came together to help out.

Last week three-year-old Jase came down with flu like symptoms.

“He started to get ill, high fever, they reported to the doctor right away,” Jase’s Great-Aunt Michele Hewitt, said.

But as it progressed, his condition got worse.

“That’s always a shock especially when you are hearing reports in the news with families that are struggling with the same thing,” Hewitt, added.

Jase was airlifted to the intensive care-unit at Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

“He’s been put on life support and he’s sedated, you know he’s three-and-a-half years old, for someone that age it’s difficult to understand why he’s got tubes in,” Hewitt, explained.

His dad Ryan, a Boyne City firefighter and mom Abby have been by his side ever since.

Taking off work to care for him as he undergoes multiple procedures.

And without asking…

“The people in the community and surrounding areas have been just so wonderful and great with prayers and donations and wondering how they can help out it’s just been so amazing what the community and surrounding areas have been,” Boyne City Fire Chief and Jase’s Grandfather Dennis Amesbury, said.

Throughout stores in Boyne City and East Jordan you can find these fire boots getting filled with cash, along with various fundraisers throughout the region.

“You just feel so grateful, knowing that people out there and people we don’t even know of are sending prayers and stuff,” Chief Amesbury, added.

Jase’s condition continues to improve and the family is overwhelmed by the support.

“We have our breakdowns and emotional feeling that we have every day, but to know what everybody is sharing and the prayers that are out there it’s just overwhelming.
