Second Round of Special CWD Deer Hunt Begins

Thursday marks the start of a second special deer hunt in Montcalm and Ionia Counties.

The hunt is taking place to help the DNR find deer with chronic wasting disease to combat the spread in the deer population.

The special hunts will help the DNR find where the infected are located and get an estimation of how many there are. Both firearm and archery is allowed

But firearm season rules apply and mandatory deer checks are in place to harvested deer.

“We want to be able to get a better idea of the amount of deer that are positive and their locations. It’s very important for us to understand where this is located and how many deer are being affected,” said Katie Keen, Wildlife Communications Coordinator.

The DNR says between January 4th and 7th there were 150 deer harvested between the two counties. The hunt runs until Sunday and is restricted to certain townships in the two counties.
