Reed City Snowmobile Bridge Replacement Could Cost More Than $1M

A bridge used by snowmobilers on a popular trail needs to be replaced.

And the cost of the project could be more than $800,000.

The DNR has been studying the White Pine Trail Bridge in Reed City, and found that structures holding up the bridge up need to be replaced.

It also found that the bridge over the Hersey River can no longer carry more than 6,000 pounds.

There’s erosion around some of the pylons, and no longer meets construction standards.

Replacing the bridge could cost anywhere between $800,000 and $1.2 million.

“The southern abutment which was built many years ago has completely failed. All of the debris and wing walls have fallen over and it eroded it into Hersey River. We are still allowing snowmobiles over the bridge and pedestrian traffic,” says unit supervisor Scott Slavin.

The bridge’s pylons are from the early 20th century.

It’s not clear who will cover the cost of replacement.
