Wexford County Sheriff Shares Tips for Discarding Holiday Boxes

Getting a new flat screen TV or a new video game console for the holidays is exciting, but where you discard the box it came in could lead to trouble.

Discarded boxes for gifts left out for garbage pickup are an advertisement for potential burglars.

Wrapped items left in vehicles too can lead to a higher chance of theft, according to police.

The Wexford County Sheriff’s Office has advice to keep your holiday gifts from falling into the wrong hands.

“Crush the boxes down and cut them up, because you are advertising what you have in your home and criminals are opportunists. If they can see that you had some big ticket items recently delivered to your home, you’re going to be a target for them,” said Sheriff Trent Taylor.

Police say to also remove any personal information off boxes before throwing them out.
