Hook & Hunting: Ice Fishing Safety

Winter has definitely arrived here in Northern Michigan. This has many ice fisherman gathering their gear. But don’t be fooled by the cold.

With the high winds followed by the heavy snowfall, most Northern Michigan lakes do not have safe ice. Chris Knaisel of Pilgrim’s Village in Cadillac says the snow insulates the ice and doesn’t allow it to freeze, and venturing out right now could be very dangerous.

“There is ice you can walk on out there, but 10 feet away, you don’t know. With that much snow on there you have no visual clues of what you are walking on, it would be walking out there like you are blind so, a lot of eager people out there, and the best thing is just to wait right now it’s just, it’s not worth it,” says Pilgrim Village manager, Christopher Knaisel.
