Grand Traverse County Commissioners Discuss Plans for New Jail

The Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners are discussing options, including a possible new jail building for a 27 acre parcel of land.

The county bought the land on Lafranier Road in 2000 and is already home to the Grand Traverse Health Services and Public Services.

The original intent for the land was to build a new jail site capable of housing 300 inmates, something the sheriff says is greatly needed.

“Our biggest concern would be we need to be together. We have three separate buildings right now. It’s very difficult to operate out of two different buildings,” says sheriff Tom Bensley.

The board is also looking into repurposing Pugsley Prison as a jail site.
