Neighbor, Firefighter Pull Man from Burning Home in Cheboygan County

A man was airlifted to the hospital and is now in critical condition after a fire burned through a trailer in Cheboygan County.

The victim Michael Willnow is mentally challenged and was unable to get out right away, but quick thinking neighbors and firefighters helped get him out of the burning home.

It happened just before 6:00 a.m. on Friday, at a home on Strawflower Lane in Cheboygan County’s Grant Township.

Michael was still in the trailer while it was burning, but a quick-thinking neighbor hopped on top of a car and broke through a window where him and a fireman pulled Michael out and got him to safety.

“Lee” Reiman is the family’s neighbor.

“All I kept thinking was just keep breathing,” Lee, said.

When Lee left to go to work, he saw flames billowing from his neighbor’s trailer and heard screams echoing through the neighborhood.

“The mother was on the porch and the house was burning pretty bad and they were saying Michael was still inside.” Lee, explained.

Without thinking he pulled a car up to the side of the trailer and smashed the window.

“I got on top the car and knocked the window out where his bedroom was, where she thought he went and there he was and I grabbed him and pulled him out as far as I could,” Lee, said.

“I had to do something. I just can’t stand by and let that happen no way, that’s not how I’m wired,” Lee, added.

The first firefighter on scene helped Lee break Michael out and get him into the ambulance.

“Our first responding fireman was helping and loading him in the back of a pickup truck to get him to EMS,” Alverno Fire Dept. Asst. Chief Ron Fenlon.

Michael’s mom is in her 70s and was also hospitalized, she is in stable condition.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
