Bill Introduced in Lansing to Give State More Control Over Local Governments’ Pensions
A bill introduced Thursday in Lansing would give the state more control when it comes to dealing with local governments’ underfunded pensions and retire health care plans.
Hundreds of police and firefighters showed up at the capitol Wednesday to oppose the idea.
The Republican-backed bill looks to require municipalities to report financial information about their workers’ retirement systems to the state.
It could lead to a board of state and local appointees to deal with the problem.
A group of unionized police and firefighters said it had an agreement with Republican leaders on the issues, but says the bill goes beyond those concepts.
