Bill to Alter Hiring Policy For Convicted Felons Heads to Governor’s Desk
A bill headed to the governor’s desk would require a new policy for the Department of Corrections to hire felons.
The state Senate approved the bill unanimously Wednesday.
Right now, convicted felons are not allowed to be employed in the prison agency, this bill would make an exception, only if it wouldn’t risk public safety.
It also requires an extensive background check and approval from the department director.
The agency hopes it will be a way to lead by example, since many employers exclude hiring those with a criminal record.
