A familiar sight for many in Northern Michigan, bucks being raised up the pole in celebration of opening day of firearm deer season.
The tradition going strong in Mancelona where they’ve got their 63rd Annual Buck Pole Contest.
The Mancelona Chamber of Commerce is hosting it from daybreak of opening day until 7 p.m. Thursday.
Hunters who bring in their deer can register and have it judged by weight, points, and spread, as well as enter into a raffle.
Eighteen bucks have been brought in so far, an increase from last year.
The event has become a standing family tradition.
“As far as the rules and prizes and all that, the contest and the way everything works, whatever they did it was working right. Because we have had people come back year after year, generations of hunters, generations of volunteers and it’s something that all of the community gets involved in,” Joanie Moore, director, Mancelona Chamber of Commerce said.
The chamber is hosting a live feed of the buck pole on its website.
