DNR Shares Hunting Safety Reminders Ahead of Opening Day

Opening day for firearm deer season is a tradition for many Northern Michigan families and, in some cases, a holiday.

But with thousands trying to score that trophy buck, the DNR is reminding hunters that they’re not alone in the woods and fields.

The agency has warnings for seasoned-hunters and even non-hunters who may be hiking in the recently repopulated woods.

“Knowing where your property is, if you’re on public land, just being aware that people are out and about. Just because it’s deer season doesn’t mean there’s not other people out there. So think about your target, identify it and make sure you know what’s behind the target,” said Katie Keen, a DNR wildlife technician.

The DNR also wants to make sure you attach the tag securely before moving your deer.
