Sault Ste. Marie Airport Receives Helicopter for Medical Emergencies

A new service at an Upper Peninsula airport will benefit those with serious medical emergencies.

A Valley Med Flight helicopter arrived at Sanderson Field in Sault Sainte Marie Tuesday evening.

It will be stationed in the Soo full-time with a pilot, paramedic and nurse.

The project has been in the making for two years and is now a reality.

Before this service, transferring patients by ambulance from War Memorial Hospital to a trauma center took several hours.

That time will now be cut by two-thirds.

“To be able to get people to the needed care very quickly is something that we pride ourselves on,” Marla Bunker, War Memorial Hospital said.

There is no cost to the hospital to have this service.

Private insurance, Medicaid or Medicare typically will pay for air transportation.
