An Upper Peninsula high school teacher submitted his resignation to the school board.

Longtime Newberry High School science teacher, Jeff Puckett, announced his resignation in front of a crowd of supporters at a school board meeting Monday night.

Puckett was placed on administrative leave after wielding a knife in his classroom.

Tahquamenon Area Schools called it unprofessional and not something they take lightly.

Many people in the community fought for Puckett to keep his job, saying it was part of a tradition.

His resignation is effective on January 1.
