Empire Man Arrested After Driving Car Into Crystal River

An Empire man was arrested after Leelanau County deputies say he drove his car into the Crystal River on purpose.

Deputies say it happened Sunday night just before 8:30 near M-22 in Glen Arbor Township.

An investigation determined the man drove the car intentionally into the river and got stuck.

When the National Park Service and deputies made contact with the driver they could smell alcohol.

The driver was arrested for drunk driving and was taken to the Leelanau County jail.

He also received several citations from the National Park Service.
