Snyder Orders Flags Lowered to Half-Staff in Honor of Late US Rep. Ehlers

Flags in Michigan will fly at half-staff Thursday in honor of former US Representative Vern Ehlers.

Ehlers passed away last week.

From 1993 to 2011, he represented Michigan’s third district, which covers Kent, Barry and Ionia counties.

While serving in congress, Ehlers fought for protection for the Great Lakes and funding for math and science education.

He was previously a state lawmaker and taught physics at Calvin College.

Governor Snyder has ordered that all U.S. and Michigan flags be lowered to half-staff on all state buildings and within the state Capitol building to honor Ehlers.

Businesses, schools and other organizations are also encouraged to display their flags at half-staff.

Flags should be returned to full staff on Friday.

A service is being held for Ehlers Thursday at 3 p.m. at Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids.
