No Money? No Problem: An Antrim Co. Restaurant’s Inspiring Food Philosophy

Front Porch Ministries in Ellsworth puts out a helping hand to locals who may be down on their luck.

When we found out how, you’ll see why we couldn’t believe it.

"It’s a really unique situation."

The word unique only scratches the surface…

"I really kind of wondered if it was going to work at all."

When it comes to the Front Porch’s strategy on running a successful business.

"Anything that’s on the menu… if you can’t afford, we will pay for your meal for you," explained Front Porch Manager Janet Rasmussen. "No big deal. If you can afford it, wonderful."

You heard right: a square meal and potentially no check when you’re through!

Yet, from that call-it-crazy idea, success followed naturally.

"It’s huge," exclaimed Rasmussen. "This is a big gathering place for different organizations in town."

Order your meal, and in place of the bill, you’ll instead find a suggested donation.

The significance is not lost on the people who work there.

"It’s awesome because the community has supported us," said Rasmussen. "More businesses are opening up, so I think we’re coming back alive again.

On our visit, the Front Porch catered to local seniors, again going the extra mile with desert included.

A reminder, perhaps, nine years after opening its doors, of the vision that still carries it.

"It’s gotten a good reputation throughout the area, so it’s not just an Ellsworth thing, it’s a regional thing," explained regular John Hastings. "You can hardly find a place to park."

Pay more, pay less or don’t pay at all–as they would likely tell you, those who give, also receive.

"I hope we go another nine years," said Hastings. "It’s just been a real boon to the whole community. We’ve got the support of the community. It’s a wonderful way to do things."
