‘Ingrid Goes West’ satirizes the perils of social media envy

LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Elizabeth Olsen says she was once a social media detractor, until she decided to star as an Instagram celebrity in the dark satire “Ingrid Goes West.”

Olsen says she has a newfound respect for those who make a living on the social media platform, although as a public figure her it can be a complicated balance to strike.

Olsen stars opposite Aubrey Plaza in the indie film. Plaza plays a woman who becomes obsessed with Olsen’s character’s Instagram. She goes so far as to start dressing and acting like her and eventually even befriends her social media idol.

Once a social media detractor, Olsen joined Instagram because of the film, and now has more than 668,000 followers.

“Ingrid Goes West” opens in limited release Friday.
