Debbie Stabenow, along with Senator Gary Peters introduced a bill that would hold some pipelines in the Great Lakes to stricter standards.
It includes Line 5, run by Enbridge beneath the Straits of Mackinac.
Right now, pipelines that run through the lakes are classified as "onshore.”
They’re held to less demanding standards than offshore lines.
The bill would change that, forcing operators to cover all oil spill cleanup costs.
It would also let the fed shut down pipelines over unsafe conditions.
