Grand Traverse Co. First Responders Participate In Drill For Boardman River Dams

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, contractors, and emergency management and rescue crews on the Boardman and Sabin Dams Wednesday.

An emergency action plan is a requirement for the current dam removal contract for the Boardman Dam Removal and River Restoration Project.

This year they decided to include an on-site training to help everyone better prepare.

The requirement was sparked by the uncontrolled release of water from the brown bridge dam a few years ago.

The drill included contractors evacuating the site and one being washed away by the Sabin dam–only to be rescued by Grand Traverse Metro Fire.

Chris Schropp,Chief of Construction Branch at the Lake Michigan Area Office for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says, “The reason we wanted to have a drill on site was so that all the workers that are on site no the hazards that are involved they know how to respond if this was were ever to occur and we also wanted to include the county emergency management office and we wanted to get the local emergency responders to get their involvement.”

The drill wasn’t just on site contractors also made a mock 911 call to dispatch.
