Michigan Senate Approves Bill To Double Recount Fees

In Michigan, advancing legislation would double the fee to file a recount petition if the losing candidate is down by more than 5 percent.

On Tuesday, the bill approved 27-11 by the Senate, was a response to Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein’s recount last fall.

Stein won 1 percent of the vote, which supporters say showed fees are too low to cover the cost if the losing candidate is behind more than 5 points.

Recount fees would increase from $125 per precinct to $250.

The legislation now goes to the House for consideration.
