American Astronauts Replace Failed Computer Outside International Space Station

Quick moves in zero gravity.

Two American astronauts had to head outside the International Space Station after a computer failure.

Station commander Peggy Whitson and flight engineer Jack Fischer had to replace the computer that failed on Saturday.

It’s is one of two that control equipment, including solar power panels, cooling loops, radiators and robotics gear on the U.S. side of the station.

The computer problem did not affect station operations or pose a risk to the crew, but NASA managers wanted to restore a backup as fast as possible.

Whitson is the record holder for the most time any American astronaut has spent in space.
