Mount Pleasant Elementary School Recognized for Promoting Healthy Lifestyles

Music and dancing is all part of a normal Monday morning for students at Fancher Elementary School.

Now the school’s being recognized for getting kids moving.

It started when one teacher submitted a grant application, and that led to Fancher Elementary in Mount Pleasant being named one of Michigan’s healthiest.

It’s part of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services School Wellness Award.

Fifty-five schools were recognized for promoting healthy lifestyles in Lansing last week, and Fancher Elementary takes it seriously.

They start each school day off with five to ten minutes of physical activity to get kids moving, and brains working.

“It’s just something, because a lot of our children might ride the bus for over an hour so they’re sitting, and they don’t really get recess before school. So they get here and might need to get those wiggly worms out so they can focus on their learning,” explains P.E. teacher Nicki Schlicht.

Student Kayden Hug says, “So your body can be healthy, you can run more good and have better life and can live longer.”

Fancher will receive a badge for the school’s website and a plaque that will hang inside the building.
