Hook & Hunting: Coast Guard Shares Boating Safety Tips

Memorial Weekend is right around the corner and many people are itching to get back on the water.

Marinas aren’t full with power and sail boats, but people in their kayaks and canoes are out on the water.

Before you go out, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City is reminding everyone the water may not be totally safe yet.

They say right now, the water temperatures are in the low 40’s and can cause hypothermia within minutes.

“We know it’s fun, we know it’s a great thing to do, we just ask that people go out there and prepare for it,
says Lt. Jon Ardan. “As long as you wear the right gear and you let somebody know where you’re going and have a good float plan, you can do things safely and still go out there and have fun.”

The Coast Guard says you should always wear a life jacket, go out with a buddy, wear the proper clothing, and always tell someone your plans.
