Grand Traverse Co. Sheriff’s Office, TCPD Honors Fallen Officers

A somber tribute to law enforcement officers killed on duty and special recognition for one of Northern Michigan’s own.

It’s Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s office and Traverse City Police Department’s annual National Police Memorial Week ceremony.

State police, deputies, city police all came out to recognize not only fallen officers, but remember TCPD’s Sergeant Dennis W. Finch.

It’s been 19 years since he was killed on duty.

A somber reminder of how dangerous this job can be.

Retired TCPD Officer David Leach says, “We’ve all had close quarters and close encounters and yes I think of Sgt. Finch a lot he was standing right next to me when he was shot.”

Gerald Crawford drove hours for the ceremony, “Soul bearing, it makes me feel like we should have had 10 times as many people here as we did.”

National Police Week ends this Saturday.
