Mackinac Bridge To Close To Traffic During Labor Day Bridge Walk

A traffic jam on both sides of the Mighty Mack could change your Labor Day plans.

For the first time in history, the bridge will close to all traffic during the Labor Day Bridge Walk.

It’s one of the busiest travel days of the entire year, and the key concern here is safety.

In the past, vehicles could still cross the bridge. This year, all lanes will be closed to traffic, except the buses carrying the walk participants.

The bridge authority said this was not an easy decision to make and they know it will be an inconvenience to those wanting to travel across the bridge on Labor Day.

But say it was the best choice to keep a 60 year tradition going while keeping the thousands of people safe.

There’s heightened concern after recent terrorist related attacks in Europe using trucks as weapons.

We spoke to Michigan State Police who said the decision was not made because of any specific threat but they are putting extra security measures in place to prevent something from happening.

Just like in the past, two lanes will be closed before the walk starts and then all lanes will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to noon.

They are giving travelers several months to plan ahead for it.
