Cheboygan County sixth graders getting hands on Friday morning as they learned all about fly fishing.
An Inland Lakes School teacher, Rebecca Heckman, stumbled upon Headwaters TU and their More Tackle Boxes, Less X-Boxes’ initiative and wanted to get her kids involved.
Headwaters TU and the DNR came to school Friday to teach the kids.
Kids learned how to tie knots, make bait and cast a fly fishing pole.
The kids say it was a great day that made them want to get out fishing.
"Just a lot of fun," a sixth grader Ryann Clancy said. "It’s kind of like a group work, so we were all interacting with each other and it was just really fun."
Each of the sixth graders went home with their own fishing pole paid for by a fundraiser from Headwaters TU.
