Detroit Lions Mascot, Former Player Surprise Traverse City Elementary Students

The Detroit Lions mascot and a former all-pro Lion surprised students at a Traverse City elementary school Friday.

As part of the Detroit Lions Leaders for Life group, "Roary" the lion and Lomas Brown gave the kids tips for being great students and leading healthy lifestyles.

Roary the lion and coaches from the Detroit Lions Football Education Program gave Cherry Knoll students a fun lesson in what it takes to be a leader.

The lesson ties into a schoolwide initiative to jump start kids into leading healthy lifestyles.

“This year we’ve had a whole cultural twist to leading healthy active lifestyles so to have that all pull together and have the Detroit lions reemphasize all of those leadership qualities was just dynamic,” says Cherry Knoll Principal Ryan Schrock.

Coach Chris and Coach Pat ran drills, played games, outlined nutrition, and left the kids in stitches with help from the Lion’s mascot.

Lions legend Lomas Brown surprised the crowd speaking about his life and career, teaching kids that success on any field is attainable with hard work and determination

"I’m hoping that they see a person that has been in the NFL that has gotten to the top, and they see that I’m just a regular person; and if you apply yourself you know they can do the same thing. I did there’s no magic potion there’s nothing like that, it’s hard work, and yea it’s a little luck, but it’s hard work. If they can touch a person like me and be around a person like me I can encourage them to be great," explained Brown.

Besides a great memory, Cherry Knoll Students walk away today with valuable lessons and confidence to succeed.

Throughout the summer, the Lions will be hosting football camps for kids across the state.

They’ll be back in Traverse City on June 19.
