BACN Student Summer Grocery Bag Program Aims To Help Families In Need

A Northern Michigan nonprofit is filling a gap for a community in need.

Benzie Area Christian Neighbors is kicking off a student summer grocery bag program.

Their goal is to make sure Benzie County families have food for their kids over the summer, when they’re not getting lunch or breakfast at school.

It will begin after the school year ends and end when school starts back up in the fall.

The program is for children under 15 and families will receive bags with kid-friendly, healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and other easy to make foods.

“Childhood poverty is still on the rise throughout the state,” says BACN Executive Director, Gerri Vanantwerp. “There’s a significant number of families that are working that are still struggling to meet basic needs. If we can help a family with just a little bit of extra groceries to make it through, we’re using a creative way by feeding the children to do that. Our communities will be better off if our families are stable.”
