Former Acting Attorney General Testifies About Russian Interference In 2016 Election

Speaking publicly for the first time, former acting Attorney General Sally Yates testified before a Senate Judiciary Committee about Moscow’s interference in the 2016 election.

Yates also spoke candidly about her warning to the White House, saying that former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn could be vulnerable to blackmail by the Russians.

During Monday’s three-hour hearing, Yates joined former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper in testifying about Russian meddling in the presidential election.

Both warned that future cyber-attacks from Russia are likely.

Many Democratic senators were more interested in focusing on Flynn, asking Yates about her decision to tell the White House that he had lied when he denied discussing U.S. sanctions with a Russian ambassador, to which she said she had no choice.

Then-President Obama had also warned then-president-elect Donald Trump to avoid choosing Flynn as his national security adviser.

Yates, who was an Obama Administration hold-over, was fired shortly after her warning for refusing to defend President Trump’s first temporary travel ban.

That executive order and a revamped one, are currently tied up in the courts.
