Michigan Tech Student Dies from Hypothermia On Hiking Trip

A Michigan Tech student is dead after the Marquette County Sheriff says he froze to death during a weekend hiking trip.

The sheriff says the man was pronounced dead Saturday morning in a wooded area along Rocking Chair Lake about 17 miles north of Ishpeming.

The student was one of six 19 to 20-year old men all currently Michigan Tech students who went hiking Friday night.

After one of the students went for firewood and didn’t return, his friends found him cold and wet.

They started a fire to warm him but he started showing signs of severe hypothermia.

The students called for help around 4:30 Saturday morning but it took searchers more than three hours to find them.
