National Trout Festival Kicks Off Northern Michigan Festival Season

With summer inching closer, Northern Michigan festivals are preparing for a rush of visitors!

The 81st National Trout Festival in Kalkaska starts Wednesday afternoon, kicking off the festival season.

The festival goes through Sunday and signifies the beginning of trout season.

There are a number of events from the carnival and kids fishing contest to the car show and parade.

Visitors can expect fun for the entire family during this traditional weekend.

“It started eighty some years ago, where some people from downstate came up for the opening day of trout season and they started a festival back then” explains National Trout Festival President, Deb Mooneyham. “It’s the first one of the year in Michigan that they have, so people enjoy that, get out of the winter blues and enjoy themselves.”

Events take place at a number of locations around town.
