Group Pursuing Ballot Measure To Shut Down Enbridge’s Line 5

Voters could one day help decide whether the Enbridge pipelines running through the Straits of Mackinac should be shut down.

Wednesday, the Board of State Canvassers approved the form of a petition submitted by Keep Our Lakes Great, a ballot committee created last week.

The initiated legislation would get rid of a 1953 easement for Enbridge’s Line 5 pipelines.

It would also require the company to no longer transport crude oil through them.

Groups normally try to get their petitions approved before getting signatures.

About 252,000 valid voter signatures are needed within a 180 day window to qualify for a statewide vote.
