Manton Elderly Man Arrested After Deputies Say He Pointed Gun At Them, Refused To Drop It

"This could have been a very tragic situation."

A dangerous standoff stopped before it went too far…

Wexford County Sheriff’s deputies say they were at the end of a man’s loaded gun.

Deputies were called to a home after a man threatened to hurt himself…

Wexford County Sheriff’s deputies found the armed man at a home on E. 16 ½ Rd. near 37 Rd. west of Manton last night.

Deputies say when they found the 75-year-old man walking near the woods, he pointed his rifle at them after they told him to drop it.

Deputies took cover, but never stopped trying to talk the man down, eventually calling in a crisis response team, or the Emergency Response Team.

Deputies say they used pepper-ball shot and a taser to bring the standoff to an end.

"Several points during that time the weapon was pointed at the officers,” says Undersheriff Richard Doehring, Wexford County Sheriff’s Office. “They would step back, take cover, and still kept that communication going with him. Because of the patience and skill used by our officers and their training, they kept that line of communication open."

The man suffered minor injuries.

Deputies say he will next undergo a mental evaluation.
