Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office Looks For Community’s Help With Break-in Investigation

Deputies are looking for answers after someone broke into a home on this street and stole a large amount of money Sunday.

The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office says the people living there were only gone for about two hours.

They left their home on South Briar Drive in Elmwood Township around 9 a.m.

When they got home around 11:30 they found their safe had been opened, small items and a substantial amount of cash stolen.

The sheriff’s office has not yet released the amount of cash.

They say the doors were locked and the thief got in by breaking into a side window.

For investigators it’s the timing of the crime that stands out.

Undersheriff Steve Morgan says, “We don’t have a lot of daytime breaking and entering especially to residence that are occupied, but the people had just left or had not been gone very long so we do not have a lot of these, that’s part of the equation that we’ll be looking at and see if we can determine whose responsible.”
