Commissioners, Community Members Discuss Nestle’s Request To Pump More Water From Osceola Co. Well

“That’s kind of scary wondering if it would affect our home itself.”

Discussion surrounding Nestle taking more groundwater from a Northern Michigan well is not over yet.

Heated debate on the company’s permit request to pump more water has been swirling for months.

They want to take up to 400 gallons per minute from a well near Evart in Osceola County.

Right now Nestle can draw up to 250 gallons per minute.

The company is expanding and says the water would be bottled at their plant in Stanwood.

It would add 20 jobs.

But they need DEQ approval, and zoning approval from the township.

The latter could happen Tuesday night.

9&10’s Veronica Meadows was at the planning commission meeting.

Commissioners and the community are expected to pack into the Evart Middle School Auditorium.

They will go over whether the pumping station Nestle wants to build fits zoning rules.

They would build it on a piece of land where Spring Hill Camp is.

The booster station would help Nestle handle the extra water they hope to take.

Some community members have concerns for the environment, while others are excited for what the expansion would mean for the local economy.
