Michigan Doctor Charged With Performing Genital Mutilations On Two Girls

In this update, the Detroit area doctor accused of performing genital mutilation on two seven year old girls denies she cut the girls.

Doctor Jumana Nagarwala’s lawyer says she was simply performing a religious procedure for the family that involved removing and burying skin in the ground.

She made the case Monday during a court hearing.

Nagarwala has been charged for the mutilation and placed on leave from her job at Henry Ford Health System.

Her lawyer says she belongs to a small sect of Shia Muslims that was connected to a mutilation scandal in Australia two years ago.

A judge ordered Nagarwala to jail without bond, saying she’s a threat to the public.

It’s the first time someone has been charged with violating a U.S. ban on genital mutilation.
