Leelanau County Senior Services Funding Could See Big Cuts

“We have to come up with a plan to live within those means.”

A budget deficit is affecting how well Leelanau County can help some seniors.

The $130,000 deficit was addressed in a special session.

County commissioners met in an effort to save as many programs as possible.

Commissions moved $65,000 out of the general fund into the senior services fund to reduce the number of cuts.

But $65,000 still remains, meaning deep cuts could be on the way for help with senior utilities, help with food and home medical help.

Slashing specific programs is a task that falls to senior services.

“Most of the monies are going to the neediest seniors in the area, we have committed to that and they are expecting to have these service, and these services on where they are going is very, very important,” says April Missias, Leelanau County director of senior services.

The budget cuts are expected to go into effect in the first week of May.
