The state’s department of education has a goal to improve our education system, one way they’re doing it is reaching out to schools with best practices, some in northern Michigan.

Elk Rapids Schools is one of the at least six districts part of the initiative.

The initiative wants to get Michigan school performance in the top 10 in the country in the next 10 years.

And after making visits to schools across the state, they’re hoping these few schools and their practices will serve as an example.

Elk Rapids Schools Superintendent Steve Prissel credits the hard working students and staff. “I guess what it means is that we’re focusing on the things that they believe are important to help us move forward as a state, things like educating the whole child teaching attributes like being a risk taker a communicator.”

Cheboygan Schools is the other northern Michigan district involved in the initiative.
