The Michigan Department of Transportation is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars to prevent erosion along US 31.
The $230,000 project started Monday to replace two walls, each about 50 feet long, in the city of Petoskey.
Contractors are building a retaining wall to shore up the cliff along US 31 near Sunset Park.
MDOT says it’s part of a 2019 project, but they realized the sooner they start, the better.
“We took a look at it, and it was eroding a little bit quicker than we thought it would be, so we decided well instead of taking our chances, let’s go ahead and replace it now so really we can build on top of it, and it won’t affect anything,” Matt Radulski, operations engineer for MDOT said.
MDOT says the project is expected to continue through May 19.
