Trump Removes Steve Bannon From National Security Council Role

President Donald Trump’s chief strategist is no longer a member of the National Security Council.

Steve Bannon was stripped of some of his powers Wednesday.

Democrats objected when Bannon was first named to the NSC in January.

They say politics shouldn’t be a factor in making national security decisions and Bannon is a political operative.

The announcement was made quietly, catching a lot of people, including the GOP, by surprise.

"Oh, wow. I don’t know anything about it, so I can’t comment on it. The president has a right to choose whoever he wants to server on that,” said Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Bannon has a history as the former head of Breitbart News, who provided a platform for the alt-right, a group criticized for promoting white supremacy.

"My hope is that he would have no role in government at all, that he would be completely out. Because I do think that’s not the type of advice the president should be receiving,” said Maryland Senator Ben Cardin.

The presidential memorandum restores the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the national intelligence director to be "regular attendees" to the NSC committee.

Those positions had been removed from the NSC meetings when President Trump first took office.
