Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office Says Look Out For Tax Season Scams

As everyone is rushing to finish their taxes, police are warning about scams.

This time of year, police say they start to see more reports for tax fraud or identity theft.

During tax season, many people are hitting the internet to collect their taxes.

Police say you need to be careful about the sites or software you are using.

Make sure you have security settings on your computer.

They say the IRS is not going to contact you over the phone or e-mail.

If someone tries to, those should be red flags.

“A lot of it comes down to just protecting your own identity,” says Captain Chris Clark, Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office. “You don’t want to give out personal information to people that are inquiring over the phone or via the internet. Watch emails that are forwarded to you from someone that you don’t know.”

If you ever feel victim to a scam – contact police immediately.
