Munson Medical Center Shares Health Tips After Two Children Die from Flu

A child from Northern Michigan and one in Western Michigan have died from the flu.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services say the two deaths are the first flu deaths of this year’s flu season.

The department says although the flu season has been moderate in Michigan, flu viruses are still circulating here.

Munson Medical Center says flu deaths are not uncommon.

And every time there is a pediatric death from the flu, they pay close attention to the other factors that may be in play.

“Most of the time it’s not the flu, it’s the patient,” says Salah Qutaishat, infection preventionist at Munson Medical Center. “So patients that die from influenza have other diseases that pre-disposes them to influenza and that may cause death.”

Munson says it’s still not too late to get your flu vaccine.
