Northern Michigan Man Charged In Unusual MSP Computer Crimes Investigation

A tip led state police to a man living in Manistee County, close to 300 pictures of child porn and what they’re calling a unique investigation.

The suspect’s name is Randy Johannes.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department got a tip about an unrelated sex crime investigation.

They went to the Michigan State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

The investigation led them to Johannes’ home in Norman Township in Manistee County.

Troopers found a SD card with around 300 disturbing photos of children taken with a camera.

The children were not local.

That’s when the new case started.

Detective/Sergeant Wesley Smith of the task force says they weren’t dealing with typical child porn images.

“The images were actually taken with a digital camera of a computer screen so the images were grainy, a very poor quality, but the subject had taken the time to physically take an image of each picture.”

Randy Johannes is charged with three counts of having child abusive material and could face up to 4 years in prison.

He’s due back in court next month.
