Traverse City Community Meals Program Needs Donations For Christmas Meal

Christmas is just a week away, and the holidays can be an especially hard time for people who are hungry.

A Traverse City foundation wants to make sure everyone has a Christmas dinner, but right now they need more help.

Traverse City’s Community Meals Program is a non-profit organization that makes sure that those who can’t afford food don’t go hungry.

But right now, they can’t help everyone who needs it.

“The Community Meal Program is a little short on money this year,” explains board member Julie Gillum.

A program that feeds thousands of people, leaving no hungry person behind, needs a boost this year.

The Community Meal Program runs on donations, but money here is at an all-time low this holiday season.

“We’re just at the point where we need to replenish our reserves, get enough money to pull off the Christmas meal,” Gillum says.

They started a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising what they need.

“It was kind of a last effort to make sure that we can hold the meal and serve our community,” says Gwen Stokes, Holiday Chair Person.

With the GoFundMe page and direct donations, they’re up to $4,000, but that’s still not enough.

“So we’re currently $1,000 short for this Christmas holiday,” Stokes explains. “Each meal takes roughly $2,300 to $3,000 to put on.”

That money will go directly to meals to feed hundreds of families who would otherwise go without on Christmas – a donation that will spread the holiday spirit in the most basic way.

“It’s incredibly important to the people in need that we collect this money, that we provide the meal that they’ve been counting on for so many year,” says Gillum. “The meals life is sustaining for people.”
