TCAPS Reacts To Arrest Of Man For Sex Crimes On School Property

Traverse City Area Public Schools is emphasizing the importance of online safety after a 50-year-old man was caught having sex with a student in a school parking lot.

This is a story Northern Michigan’s News Leader has been following all week.

Deputies arrested Larry Tabbert.

He was charged with sex crimes, accused of using a dating app to meet up with a teenage student in the Traverse City West High School parking lot and engaging in sexual acts.

TCAPS says they are proud of the student who told them about the situation with Tabbert and the student in the car.

They say it’s important to provide students a safe and comfortable environment where they can speak up.

"I’m not happy that the situation happened. I’m happy that the person got caught, because we created an environment where people knew there would be no blame. There would be no shame and there would be no punishment," says TCAPS Superintendent Paul Soma.

TCAPS says they have security cameras in their parking lot, deputies patrolling and they’ll try to learn from this situation.
