Manhunt Underway For Gunman Who Killed Georgia Police Officer, Wounded Another

A manhunt is underway Thursday morning after a gunman shot and killed a police officer and wounded another in Georgia.

Gunfire broke out Wednesday morning in Americus, a town about 130 miles south of Atlanta.

An Americus police officer and a Georgia Southwestern State University police officer were responding to a domestic situation when it happened.

Police say Americus Officer Nicholas Smarr was killed and university Officer Jody Smith was critically wounded.

The gunman, identified as Minguell Lembrik, is now on the run.

Police are now pleading for Lembrik to turn himself in to avoid any more violence.

At least five other Georgia law enforcement officers have been killed by gunmen so far this year.

An autopsy for Officer Smarr’s body has been scheduled for later Thursday.
