50 Years Later: The Sinking Of The SS Daniel J. Morrell

Fifty years ago the SS Daniel J. Morrell broke up in a storm, sinking to the bottom of Lake Huron, leaving only one survivor.

The Great Lakes freighter had 28 crewmen on board on November 29, 1966.

Only one man survived.

This week ceremonies are being held around the Great Lakes to honor the men who lost their lives that night.

One of those events is Tuesday night in Ohio.

It honors the sole survivor of the sinking, Dennis Hale, who passed away in 2015.

The Morrell was built in Bay City in 1906.

In its 60 years of service, the freighter made more than 2,000 trips on the Great Lakes.
