Betsie Valley Elementary School Student Receives Hero Award

A third grader at Betsie Valley Elementary school got a big surprise Monday morning.

In September, Andrew Dixon was in the car with his mom when it veered off M-115 in Manistee County and crashed into some trees near the Betsie River.

Monday morning, a trooper with the Michigan State Police presented 9-year-old Andrew with a Hero Award for his brave actions after the accident.

Andrew was able to get out of the car and run to the road for help, saving his mother’s life.

“I remember waking up and reaching for him and he wasn’t there,” says Johnna Karpinski, Andrew’s mother. “I felt a lot better. They just kept telling me he was in a vehicle and he was OK and he went and got help. Very proud, definitely very proud.”

Betsie Valley Elementary says they plan on holding more fundraisers to help the family.
